Overview
Plants & Things is a garden center and retail nursery located in Elk River, Minnesota. When a nearby interchange reconstruction required the State to acquire the business’s existing property, Plants & Things needed to relocate to a new, 20,000-square-foot facility down the street. With the move tied directly to the timeline of the infrastructure project, the team needed a building solution that could keep construction moving efficiently while still delivering the durable, attractive storefront a retail nursery depends on.

A state-driven relocation gave Plants & Things a tight runway to get its new facility open
With its original site slated for acquisition as part of the interchange project, the business had little flexibility on timing — the new building needed to be ready to keep the operation running without a significant gap in service to its customers.
Problem
When a nearby interchange reconstruction required the State to acquire the existing Plants & Things property, the business needed to relocate to a suitable site down the street. With the relocation tied to the infrastructure project, the team needed a building solution that could help streamline construction and get the new facility completed efficiently.
Solution
Precast was selected primarily for its speed of construction, helping provide an efficient path for rebuilding at the new location. As the design progressed, the benefits extended beyond schedule. During the finish selection process, the owner was drawn to the range of integrally colored precast options and the long-term durability of the system.
Fabcon’s Versacore sandwich panels, finished with a steel form broom and random low rib texture, gave the team a building envelope that combined efficient installation with an attractive, durable exterior suited to the new facility.
Results
The use of precast helped Plants & Things efficiently transition to its new location while delivering a durable, visually appealing facility. What began as a schedule-driven decision ultimately provided additional value through the aesthetic flexibility and long-term performance of precast.
